CMYK vs. RGB for Print

If you've ever designed something on screen and noticed it looked a bit different once printed, you're not alone. The reason often comes down to the colour mode used, CMYK vs. RGB.

These two colour models work in very different ways, and understanding the difference is key to getting the best results for your print project. In this blog, we'll explain how CMYK and RGB work, when to use each one, and how to make sure your colours come out just right when it's time to print.

What's the difference between CMYK and RGB?

CMYK and RGB are two different colour models that affect how your artwork will look when printed.

What is RGB?

RGB stands for Red, Green and Blue. This is the colour model used by screens, like your computer monitor, phone, or TV. RGB works by mixing light, and the more light you add, the brighter and more vibrant the colour becomes. For example, when you mix all the RGB colours together at full intensity, you get white light.

So, RGB is perfect for anything digital, websites, social media graphics, videos, and more. But when it comes to printing, RGB can't quite deliver the same bright, vibrant results as it does on a screen.

What is CMYK?

CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (Black). This colour model is what we use for printing. It works by layering inks on paper, starting with white paper and subtracting colour using different amounts of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black ink. The more ink you add, the darker the colour becomes.

Unlike RGB, which is about light, CMYK is about pigments and inks. When we print your design, it's all about how those inks mix to create the right colours. This is why CMYK is used for anything that's going to be printed: brochures, business cards, posters, flyers, and more.

Why Do CMYK and RGB Matter for Your Print Project?

Here's where the difference between RGB and CMYK really comes into play for your print job. If your design is created using RGB colours (like most digital artwork), it's going to look much brighter on your screen than it will in print. RGB works great for digital displays, but when we convert it to CMYK for printing, some colours might look duller or less vibrant.

For example, some bright blues and greens you see on a screen in RGB might not print as brightly because CMYK has a smaller colour range. This is why it's so important to make sure your artwork is prepared for printing in the CMYK colour model.

Tips to ensure great results for your Print Project:

  1. Send Artwork in CMYK. If possible, provide us with your design in CMYK right from the start. This will give you a better idea of how the colours will look when printed.
  2. Convert RGB to CMYK. If you already have your artwork in RGB, don't worry! We can convert it to CMYK for you. But keep in mind that some colours may shift during the conversion.
  3. Ask for a Colour Proof. This is a printed sample of your design, so you can see how the colours will actually look on paper.
  4. Consider the Paper Type. Different types of paper can affect how colours look when printed. Let us know your paper preferences, and we can guide you on what will work best for your project.
